MD – The Avon Dam
Sometimes, a structure built by man, can be an great asset to seeing the beauty of Dartmoor. The Avon Dam, is near the village of South Brent, just off the A38, Devon Express Way.
Passing through lanes with high sided Devon hedgerows, you eventually arrive at Shipley Bridge. Here there is a car park, and the start of the road to the dam. For those who are mobility challenged, the road provides an even surface, for wheelchairs and scooters, to access the beauty of Dartmoor. The road makes it’s way gentley upwards, with the river Avon flowing through it’s tree lined banks, on the right hand side. The waters seem to navigate their way around the granite boulders which block their path with ease.
Crossing a small bridge over the river, the landscape, opens out to moorland on either side. Twisting and turning, the road eventually reaches the foot of the dam. If you are able, there is a steep path up to view the waters of the lake beyond.
The fresh moorland air, seems to be able to cast all the worries and stress of life away. Tou may capture the sight of a Fox, hiding behind a rock, or a Rabbit or two brave enouth to venture out in the light of the day.
The gentle slope downwards, makes the return trip easy. Not much of a sound can be heard but the wind and the flowing waters of the Avon. It is sometimes interesting, to watch people striding from stepping stone to stepping stone in the river, without falling in. Some make it, some don’t. Two people, holding hands and whispering gentle words of love. What they say, I know not. A proposal maybe?
The Hearts
Two hearts a beating, now combine
The love in yours with that of mine
Cast and script, the actors play
Words of love, spoken, night and day
Come lay with me, as passions grow
The love of hearts, so sweet to grow
Such gentle kiss, till the night is done
In warm embrace, our hearts are one.
