MC Camborne and Heartlands
This old Cornish mining town has been made famous in recent times by Cornish comedian, Jethro, with his story “This train don’t stop at Camborne on Tuesday” and the folksong “Going up Camborne hill coming down”.
The history of Tin mining in Cornwall goes back centuries. It is speculated, that Joseph of Arimathea , a metal merchant, once brought Christ, his nephew, to the county. (See King Arthur and the Holy Grail, under Cornish Ghosts, Myths and Legends, on this Forum.
Such an important metal was also of interest to the Romans, during their occupation of Britain. 2,000 years ago. Mining continued its importance, until its decline in the 20th century. The Camborne School of Mines has an excellent international reputation.
With the mining decline, the old town, with its miner’s cottages, appeared to just drift along, with not to much going on, until now.
On the 2nd July 2012, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall officially opened Heartlands, at nearby Pool. Drawing upon the past, this venture will help bring a new heart to Cornwall.
Russell the Shuffle
Russell the Shuffle lived next door to me,
No stranger sight, could you ever see
One leg faced front and the one facedf back,
One shoe was brown, and the t,other black.
;ere, I said, “Why do ‘ee look that way?
“Forward and back, each step of the day?”.
“I “said ;EE, “It’s strange I suppose,
“ I ‘ave bbit of a problem, counting me toes”.
“It came to pass, way back when,
When I was a lad, there and then.
I ‘eard a song, ‘bout this ‘ere towns,
Going up Camborne hill, coming down”
“I scratched me ‘ead, and thought it out,
I’A challenge that’s true, no doubt”.
Upon the hill, a crowd did amass
Excited,
they waited, for Rusell to pass
With cheers and applause, Rissell walked by
A smile on his face, and a glint in his eye
For all them there knew in this ‘ere old town
Russell was first, to go up Cambornw hill, coming down!
