MD Bellever Forest, Postbridge and the East Dart – Dartmoor
This part of Dartmoor is particulary interesting. Leaving the Postbridge road, the Bellever Forst is on the right hand side of the road, leading down to Bellever. The area, has plenty of evidence of early moorland settlements.
A great walk is to start at Bellever, and follow the East Dart river southwards, heading for Dartmeet. The walk is approximately 2 miles, and is well worth it. A good vantage point is Bellever Tor, which is about .75 of a mile to the west.
Car parking at Bellever, avoids the more crowded Dartmeet.
The Lonesome Pine
Standing here, with nothing to do
My arms outstretched, my needles are blue
No one to talk with, they are all gone away
Now are chairs, sofas, and cabinets that display
Winter’s a looming, I’ll freeze to my core
My feet will be like ice, in the earth on the floor
No one cares for me, as I look to the west
I want to go there, but then I only jest
As I grow tall, I sway with a sigh
If only, if only, oh dear, oh my
Standing here, for many a year
With the rain that falls, I shed another tear
My life will change though, I feel it in me
Covered in lights, tinsel, I’m free
Bright coloured packages will lie at my base
Containing dolly’s, Teddies and cars that can race
The happiness I see, in those young excited eyes
Will make me happy too, now there’s a surprise.
