PLYMOUTH HOE ROYAL CITADEL - The Soldier

PLYMOUTH HOE ROYAL CITADEL

Looking across Plymouth Sound, and between the top of the Hoe and Sutton Harbour, is situated the Royal Citadel. This fortress constructed during the 17th century in the reign of Charles II was built to defend the port of Plymouth against attack. It is interesting however, that some of the cannon on the ramparts; actually look over the Sutton Harbour area. It is sometimes considered that this was done to remind the citizens of Plymouth, who was in charge. This bearing in mind the town supported the Parliament side, during the English Civil War.

The Citadel is still used today by 29 Commando, Royal Artillery. Guided walks are arranged, from time to time, to enable sight of the excellent views over Plymouth Sound.

The Soldier

Waiting, waiting, for the time to go
What the patrol will bring, no one will know
Mt heart feels sick, why am I in this place
It's my job of course, but what to face
I joined you know, to defend my land
Of mist and rain, sun and sand
So why here I say, on this far off soil
Do I fight a man, to his faith is loyal
I understand not, why I risk my life
All I want is my child and wife
I need to live, I miss them much
To look and smile, with my baby touch
Time to go, I dread this tour
Only though for a week or more
A flash of light, I feel no pain
My life goes by, I see it all again
For I am no more, my mind is in space
Pure love I find, in the angels embrace.
Don't cry, please don't cry, my family weep
I will come to kiss you, gently as you sleep
I live again, in heart and soul
To love you always, I miss you so.
Do not despair, my dearest one
In the love of light I wait, till we meet the sun.
