As you arrive at Bigbury on Sea, Burgh Island looks across at yo, peering at times through the mist. At low tide the island, can be reached by walking along the sandy beach. Ahead of you stands the Pilchard Inn, which it is said, dates back to the 14th century. Entering the bar, with sand covering the stone floor, it is easy to see why the Inn has a touch of mystery.
Tom Crocker, it is believed, was a local smuggler in these parts, afew centuries ago. It is said that Tom still visits the Inn to this day. His face, appears above the inside of the entrance door. It is well worth just calling in for a drink to try and catch sight of him.
