The Gallows, South Yard and the Old Market, Devonport, Plymouth
Back in 2006, on a bright Sunday afternoon. A lady psychic, originally from Hampshire, was part of a group of people on a tour of the old South Yard, Devonport. This old part of the Naval Base, has some excellent period industrial buildings.
As part of the tour, a visit to the old gallows was included. Being sensitive to such places, the lady decided to wait outside with a Naval Base representative, while the remainder of the group ventured in. While she waited, three men appeared heading towards the entrance to the gallows. She reported, that these three figures, were as real as anyone could be. The trio comprised of a blonde haired man in the centre, in what appeared to be civilian clothes, but not of modern times. The two men on either side, were wearing a grey uniform, and were intent of taking the man in the middle into the gallows. Just before entering, the blonde haired man looked skywards, clearly distressed. She turned to the Naval Base representative, and asked if he had seen the figures, to which he replid, “No”. Tehe remainder of the group who were inside the gallows building, did not see anything either. Could this have been a snapshot of a event that happened two hundred years or so earlier, when the gallows were used?
Later on, as the group approached the Old Devonport market, the psychic lady noticed a figure standing near, what would have been, the main door. The figure was that of a large lady, dressed in a long black dress, with white buttons around the top. The woman’s dress, would have been common place in the 1880’s, but not in current times. Again, the rest of the group saw nothing. Just another snapshot of the past? It looks certain that it was, demonstrationg that ghosts are not confined to the night.
