Whatever happened to King Billy?
An old figure head, from the day’s of wooden ships, once stood guard just over the wall in South Yard, Devonport, next to Mutton Cove.
This old figure head, nicknamed King Billy, after King William, by local people, dis-appeared from view, some years ago, when the old chap was taken off to a shed for his own protection against the weather.
This famous Devonport landmark was well known to local people, tourists, and by crews of ships returning to the port.
His old wooden construction, was no doubt, feeling the passage of time, and needed some loving tender care. But was a landmark worth a snapshot of local history.
Where is he now? Did he return? Could a replica of him be produced to fill the gap?
Devon history is important, and must not be lost.
