Loopy Looe

Loopy Looe
This famous little fishing village, is probably, one of the most visited places in the county.

Arriving by train, is a pleasant journey through the Looe valley from Liskeard. By road, is via some quite narrow roads, but the effort is worth it. Car parking is to the north of the village. Vehicle access to the village itself, is restricted.

Looe still has a working harbour. It is a delight to walk through it,s narrow but level streets. There are the usual assortment of cafes, pubs and gift shops, associated with a tourist area. Although plentiful, they seem to add to the atmosphere, rather than intrude into it.

To the south of the village, there is a small beach, which becomes popular, of course, during the summer period.

Across the harbour is West Looe. This leads out to Hannaford Point, an excellent view point over Looe Island.

In such a location, it is possible to visualise the myths and legends associated with the county of Cornwall.

Loopy Looe

Narrow streets, side by side,
Crowds of people, far and wide.
Shops of gifts, you must take home,
Eating chips and ice cream, as you roam.
Little cottages wink and say hello,
Friendliness, lives wherever you go.
Fish for lunch, fish for tea,
Fish for breakfast, would do me.
“Er lives ‘er,e” ‘ee said to I,
I looked hard, for a maiden to spy.
“ers a good sailor too, I been told!
“’er do ‘ee, if I should be so bold!
“ Many a man ‘as tried to tame ‘er see”,
“ ‘ers a lively one, you believe me”.
“ ‘er be out all night, some times they say”,
“But ready for work, again next day”.
“ ‘er will look after ‘ee, I’m sure”,
“Warm and cozy, behind ‘er door”.
All this, was to much to bear,
I said to the man “But where?”.
He looked at me strange and stroked his beard,
Was it good news, or bad I feared?
He pointed straight ahead and said,
“Just down there, ‘ee can see ‘er plain”,
I tried to see, then tried again.
“Don’t be daft, ‘ers ‘eaved too”,
“That boat there, the Loopy Looe”.

Looe is, of course, a town, not a village. What else can be expected from a Devon man.
