Triumphal Arch – Plymbridge Road – Plympton – Devon.

This unusal Arch, constructed of red brick, stands overlooking the Plym estuary. Built in 1783, by the direction of John Parker of Saltram House, was based on a design by Robert Adam, and can be seen from the house.

Also known as the Boringdon Arch, the structure, it is said, formed an entrance to the Boringdon estate, although there is little evidence to support this. The building could be considered a “folly”, possibly representing the Sun, as used in masonic symbols.
