Leather Tor - Burrator - Dartmoor - Devon

The Tor

It has been a billion years or so
Since my rocks were born of lava flow
Wind, rain, baked by solar rays
Has shaped my form, from the early days

From tropics, to moorland heath
Expanding world, from what lies beneath
Down through the tunnel I gaze
at giant reptiles, that fill the haze

They are born, and die upon my slopes
new life evolves, with greater hopes
Will it thrive, or will it fail
the mood of the Earth will prevail

There goes by, in the valley below
Men build houses, with windows that show
Aview of the moor, with mine opencast
but with limited ore, it will not last

They are gone now, like the breeze so cool
All there is left, is Crazy Well Pool
The heavens give birth, to a great lake
Not born of nature, it is a man made fake

As moonlight shines on Ringmoor Down
It’s waters give life, to nearby Plymouth town

Sheepstor Bridge, now drowned and gone
Church and cottages, what did they do wrong
In the quiet, of a winter’s night
Hark! The toll of a bell, may be heard ‘neath the waters bright

Time moves on, to create what will come
I am cloaked with snow, forever lonesome
Stones that stand, hand in hand, in a ring
Ancient rights, and power to bring
The past is past, the future is sure
I will continue to watch, for I am Leather Tor.
