Newton Abbot Town and Railway Station

Post by Ray » Fri Aug 17, 2012 10:51 am

MD Newton Abbot
Just to the north of Torquay, and south of the A38 express way, between Exeter and Plymouth, is the old market town of Newton Abbot. Mostly known for it’s racecourse, the town is worth a visit. The centre has a good selection of shops and a first class market. The out of town shopping centre of Trago Mills, is a couple of miles north.
Those arriving by train, a few years ago, may remember the voice that came over the public address system at the station, in a broad Devon accent. See below.

Newton Abbot Railway Station
“New’tN’abbot, New’tN’New’tN’abbot,
This is New’tN’abbot,
Train arrived platform 2. 9.55 fromPaddingt’un
Change ‘ere, fur Torquay and Paint’un.
Train standing platform 4, is the 3.55 to Penzance,
Will it get there? Why not take ‘ee a chance
Call’in at Totnes, Plymuff, Lisk’erd, Bodmin Parkway
St Aust’al, Truro, St Erth, no Camb’uen Toosday
Change ‘ere for Tinmuff and Dawlish,
You’m time for a sandwich, if you wish.
Train leaves fur there, as quick as ‘ee come,
That is of course, if us can find one.
New’tN’abbot, New’tN’abbott,
This is New’tN’abott,
Train now leaving Platform 6, leaving on times,
If ‘ee wanted Exeter St David’s, hard lines.
New’tN’abbotNew’tNabbot
The is New’t N’abbot.”

It has been reported, that Isombard Kingdom Brunel, has once again been seen walking the platforms of Newton Abbot Railway Station. It would be interesting to know, why Britain's most famous engineer, has returned after an absence of a 100 years or so.

The figure, who looks quite real rather than a ghost, was last seen heading down the track towards Teignmouth.

They say old railwaymen never die, they just fade away.
