Back in 1941, a sailor, John, was serving on the battleship, H.M.S. Prince of Wales. The ship was deployed in the Far East.

One day a woman was doing some shopping in Marlborough Street, when she bumped into her cousin John. She was excited to see him, and automatically thought he must be home on leave. She did not have chance to speak to him. She shouted to him across the road to him. He turned, smiled, and waved to her. She waved back-

On returning home, the woman told of her meeting to her family. They looked at her with some amazement. No, they said, That is not possible. Why? she replied. The family advised her. that they had received notice, that John had died when the Prince of Wales was sunk off Singapore.

Taken from family history.
